I am involved as clinician and researcher in the respiratory filed since 1989. My professional history started as Intensivist located inside a rehabilitative respiratory unit dedicated to chronicity. After academic specialization in Respiratory Diseases I have structured a weaning center dedicated to chronic cardio-respiratory patients coming from ICUs. I have the focused my attention on chronicity in the field of non invasive mechanical ventilation, mechanics, weaning modalities, weaning units, rehabilitation in weaning units, respiratory rehabilitation, long term care, neuromuscular diseases with specific interests in ALS. More recently my attention is focused on continuity of care systems as telemonitoring, home care and caregivers’ attention. Last but not least palliative care and end of life approach for non oncological diseases are two important clinical and research field of interest. In the last years I has been involved in differrent Scientific Societies (European Respiratory Society, European Lung Foundation, Associazione Italiana Pneumologi Ospedalieri, AISLA) in different local and Ministerial Italian committee dedicated to home mechanical ventilation and home care, to respiratory rehabilitation , in patient association (ALS patient association named AISLA). I have been involved in an European task force accepted by ERS on telemonitoring for respiratory diseases. I have conducted hundred reviewer activities for European Respiratory Journal, Intensive Care Medicine, Chest, Respiration, Respiratory Medicine, Respiratory Care, Lancet, Thorax, COPD, Pulmonology, Monaldi Archives for Chest diseases, Rassegna di Patologia dell’Apparato Respiratorio, Medical Journal of Person. KapatAbstract: Biology Meets Its Match
In this talk, I describe novel materials, mechanics and device designs for emerging classes of wearable health monitoring systems and implantable, minimally invasive medical devices. These include a variety of electrodes, sensors, and energy harvesting components, with promising applications in bio-integrated electronics, such as self-powered cardiac pacemakers, wearable blood pressure sensors, modulus sensor patches, and brain injectrodes. The devices can be twisted, folded, stretched/flexed and wrapped onto curvilinear surfaces or implanted without damage or significant alteration in operation. The fabrication strategies and design concepts can be applied to various biological substrates and geometries of interest, and thus have the potential to broadly bridge the gap that exists between rigid, boxy electronics and soft, curvy biology.
